Business Licenses Q&A: Jurisdictions Getting Smarter

Audience Question: Do you see certain regional and/or state jurisdictions getting smarter than others?

Amanda's Response: I feel like the southern states are getting “smarter” at the state level. I’ve seen state licensing getting more streamlined with savvier licensing officers. I’ve also seen faster processing times. On the flip side of the coin, Florida has always been aggressive about licensing and enforcement at the local level but I do not see a shift towards “smarter” licensing. We still see a lot of confusing paper applications or in-person filings throughout Florida.

Joe's Response: Overall, I would say that the southeast states have shown the biggest gains in “smarts” but that judgement is influenced by the fact they were the worst for so long and the last to get their act together. Philadelphia and The District of Columbia have revamped their licensing procedures and administration for the better in the last 6-12 months. Those cities used to be a black hole for filings, but not anymore.

(Author's Note: Business Licenses, LLC was pleased to host a webinar on April 30th, 2014 to discuss emerging trends in business license compliance. During the Q&A, the audience submitted many thought-provoking questions that our panelists didn’t have time to answer. We are going to periodically post those questions to this blog along with answers from the two panelists, Amanda Mattaliano and Joe Vitulli.)
